Innovative new roofing technologies can keep homes cooler in the summer and offer homeowners significant energy savings. New advanced metal roofing systems use "cool roof" pigments designed to reflect more of the sun's infrared wavelengths than traditional roofs. Most traditional painted metal roofs can reflect about 5 to 20 percent of infrared energy, but roofs with cool-roof coatings can reflect as much as 60 percent of this energy. By reflecting more of the sun's heat producing energy, these cool roofs can reduce air conditioning costs by as much as 20 percent.
