10,000 registered for World Urban Forum

More than 10,000 people from 157 countries have registered so far for the Third Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF 3) on human settlement and urban issues taking place June 19-23 in Vancouver.

Canada will host the UN-HABITAT sponsored event, which being organized in part by the GLOBE Foundation of Canada.

The World Urban Forum is a biannual event held to expand knowledge and to share experiences on the many complex issues related to urban sustainability and quality of life in the rapidly expanding urban areas of the world.  The first two Forums were held in Nairobi in 2002 and Barcelona in 2004.

This year’s event also marks the 30th anniversary of the first UN conference on human settlements which took place in Vancouver in 1976, which led to the establishment of the UN HABITAT program. WUF 3 is a homecoming for a world wide movement on urban sustainability that began here.

The agenda for the five days of WUF3 are designed to encourage information sharing and networking around the theme of Our Future: Sustainable Cities: Ideas to Action. The agenda is structured around the following sub-themes:

•    Urban Growth and the Environment
•    Partnership and Finance
•    Social Inclusion and Cohesion

A detailed description of these themes is available on the WUF3 website.

Confirmed speakers so far include:

•    Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka - Executive Director, UN-HABITAT
•    The Honourable Alphonso Jackson - Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA
•    Mr. Qiu Baoxing - Vice-Minister of Construction, China
•    Mayor Sam Sullivan - City of Vancouver, Canada
•    Madame Gao Yufeng - Chairperson, Shanghai Land Group Co. Ltd, China

What makes the World Urban Forum unique is that discussions are informal and free of the constraining protocol that usually accompanies UN meetings.  This allows government leaders, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, grassroots movements, urban professionals, youth and private sector representatives the opportunity to share ideas and dialogue on the most pressing issues facing our cities.

The format will include morning dialogue sessions, plenary sessions, keynote addresses, networking opportunities and a host of varied side events such as a lunch-hour speaker series, book launches, receptions, site visits, awards, concerts, films and other cultural events related to urban sustainability.

Practical demonstrations of urban sustainability strategies in action will also be seen at the Exposition, a 4500m2 display area where wide range of exhibitors will display their work.  Leading edge projects, ideas, case-studies, and best practices from around the world will be integrated into the main Forum.  To date, over 70 world-renowned sustainability projects have confirmed their participation.

As well, a special video theatre, CineUrbana, will allow delegates to see ‘ideas into action’ demonstrated live over the five days.

Youth will also play an important role, as a number of events are planned to encourage youth participation and engagement in defining the urban strategies they will inherit in the future.
