The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency will launch a satellite called Furoshiki on 10/18/06 to test a concept of spider-like robots building complex structures in space. The idea is that the spider bots could build a large solar array by crawling over a giant web held together by satellites. The project's engineers hope to be able to one day build huge solar panels for satellites that could transmit the solar energy back to Earth. This first test will launch a miniature web and test how the prototype robots function in zero gravity.
